Adapting to a New World: English Society in the Seventeenth-Century Chesapeake (Institute of Early American History and Culture)
Published in Hardcover by Univ of North Carolina Pr (September, 1994)
Author: James P. P. Horn
Average review score:

Adapting to a New World
Horn compares local societies in England and the colonial Chesapeake to support his argument that the social development of 17th century Virginia and Maryland cannot be fully understood unless it is placed within the broader context of the social development of the 17th century Anglophone world. Until nearly the end of the 1600s, the majority of colonists in the Chesapeake were born and raised in England. They brought with them not only English traditions and customs, but also news and attitudes that reflected the current social developments in England. The colonial societies were affected by these developments. For instance, the uprisings against proprietary rule in Maryland and Bacon's Rebellion in Virginia appear far less extraordinary when they are viewed together with the political upheavals occurring in England. This broader view of the colonial Chesapeake refutes claims that Virginia and Maryland were somehow abhorrent, rather they were preserving and adapting English traditions and customs to life on the Chesapeake while operating in an extended Anglophone world.

A guide to successful mentoring relationships
I read parts of this book on the web site of the National Academy Press and decided to order a hardcopy. This is a useful guide for anyone involved in (or contemplating) a career in higher education. The book is a well-organized collection of advice on mentoring undergraduate, graduate and postdoctoral students and junior faculty. It also addresses issues related to cultural bias, sexual harassment, and thesis planning. The guide features a long discussion on career prospects and career planning for students in science and engineering, with a set of examples of non-academic careers.

African Experiences of Cinema
Published in Hardcover by British Film Inst (October, 1996)
Authors: Imruh Bakari, Mbye B. Cham, and British Film Institute
Average review score:

A diverse study of African Cinema
The quality of this work lies in its ability to get opinions out of every corner of the field: film makers as well as theoretics give their opinions about African Cinema. This means the book isn't very 'structured', but it offers an opportunity to explore -little by little- the state of African Cinema today. It's an excellent starting point for whoever wants to know more about this subject.

Aia Guide to Chicago
Published in Hardcover by Harcourt (June, 1993)
Authors: Alice Sinkevitch, Laurie McGovern Petersen, American Institute of Architects Chicago Chapter, Chicago Architecture Foundation, Landmarks Preservation Council of Illinois, and Perry R. Duis
Average review score:

a solid, valuable visual guide to Chicago's architecture
Chicago is generally known as one of the centers of modernist architecture, and this visual guidebook, complete with maps, photographs and authoritative little essays on most of the important buildings, is a must-buy if you plan to tour this richly textured urban center. It's also one of the best small resources for anyone interested in architecture from 1850 to the present. Inexpensive, designed to slip in your pocket, it holds up well-- I depend upon mine to help me with the walking tours of the city I give on a regular basis, and it's still in one piece after three or more years of hard use.

Aiaa Guide for the Verification and Validation of Computational Fluid Dynamics Simulations
Published in Paperback by American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (June, 1998)
Author: American Institute of Aeronautics & Astr
Average review score:

A good introduction to Verification and Validation of CFD
The book covers the basics of verification and validation of CFD simulations. It is not an advanced text for scientists, but an introductory text for beginners or CFD engineers. It is divided into 5 chapters, with a solid background presentation in chapter 1, followed by a description of the terminology (chapter 2). In the rest of the book, the author divides the subject into verification (grid and time step sizes tests) and validation (comparasion with previous or experimental data), presenting good descriptions of both itens.

Alevi Identity: Cultural, Religious and Social Perspectives: Papers Read at a Conference Held at the Swedish Research Institute in Istanbul, November 25-27, 1996 (Transactions (Svenska Forskningsinstitutet I Istanbul), V. 8.)
Published in Hardcover by Curzon Press (September, 1998)
Authors: Tord Olsson, Elisabeth Ozdalga, Catharina Raudvere, and Svenska Forskningsinstitutet I Istanbul

Alevi Identity
The Alevis of Turkey are one of the largest, most mysterious, and least familiar religious minorities of the Middle East. Even their numbers are unknown (estimates range from 6 to 20 million) and their history is murky (they seem to have emerged as a community in the sixteenth century). The handsomely produced proceedings from a 1996 conference go a long way toward providing reliable information on this large population with a vast potential to affect Turkish public life. The one problem with Alevi Identity, at least for most readers, has to do with its being pitched for fellow experts; the volume lacks introductory chapters, a glossary, an index, and the other features that would make its subject more accessible.

In brief, the Alevis are one of the Shi`i groups so remote from the Sunni mainstream (like the Druze, the Ahl-i Haqq, and the `Alawis of Syria) that their adherence to Islam is in doubt. They have little use for the Qur'an (which they believe is missing hundreds of verses about `Ali ibn Abi Talib, the central figure of their faith), they do not attend mosque, and they ignore many of the Islamic regulations. Alevis had a rough time of it during the Ottoman period but their status improved with the Republic, which they enthusiastically backed. A profound change took place in the 1970s, when a new generation of Alevis, growing up in the cities and well-educated, turned to leftist politics as a hallmark of their identity, to the detriment of organized religion.

The Alevi tradition, unwritten and unsophisticated, now must modernize if it is to hold on to the youth and survive. This means either establishing itself as a valid, if heterodox, variant of Islam or, as the more assertive elements would have it, declaring Alevism to be "outside Islam" and its adherents not Muslims. Failing the success of either of these options, the Sunnis of Turkey and the Twelver Shi`is of Iran both avidly seek to bring Alevis into their fold. Religiously, Alevis faces a choice: join with either Sunni or Twelver Shi`i branches, become an independent grouping within Islam, or identify as non-Muslims. Before long, which direction they will go should become apparent.

Analytical Greek New Testament: Greek Text Analysis (Baker's Greek New Testament Library, 1)
Published in Hardcover by Baker Book House (June, 1981)
Authors: Barbara Friberg, Timothy Friberg, Kurt Aland, and Institute for New Testament Textual Research (U.S.)
Average review score:

A magic key to understanding the Greek New Testament!
The editors perform a much needed service to all those students of the New Testament who can't remember the marvels of Koine Greek morphology and syntax. Each word of the Greek New Testament is analyzed in terms of tense, number, person, gender, etc. A simple alpha-numeric code provides the key to parsing any word. Companion volumes by the same authors use this analyzed text to provide lexical and grammatical concordances of the entire Greek New Testament. A most useful study companion for students and scholars alike.
